Wine Marketing

How to sell your wine

Where are you going to sell your wine, or in the case of just selling the grapes, who will buy it?

If you produce a wine, you are probably best of contacting smaller wine importers in Europe. Make a nice presentation of your vineyard, include a story about you and how or why you started a vineyard and send it with a bottle of sample wine. Basically all the larger food store chains selling wine in Europe buy their wine direct from the producer but they normally buy so large quantities that it is hard to even offer then wine from a smaller vineyard. The large food chain stores also get large discounts from the big producer so you are going to have problems competing. UK is today the number one market in Europe for “new world wines”, this means Australia, New Zeeland, South Africa, Chile and Argentina. Germany is the number one place in Europe for the low budget wines. In Germany price is the number one sales point when it comes to wine with over 60% of all wine retailing under 2£ per bottle (note that Germany has a lot lower tax on wine then UK. UK currently takes out a tax of 22 euros per litre imported wine, while Germany only pays 9 euros per litre wine in tax).

So finding a smaller importer that delivers to speciality stores and restaurants are probably the best odds. And don’t forget the local Spanish wine market, there is a huge market in Spain locally for everything from simple “Vinos de Tabla” to exclusive wines. Perhaps finding your own restaurants that will buy your wine is the correct solution for you. Deliver it by donkey and you are one step closer to ecologic wine!

Read more about ecologic wine under the next topic, this is the way I would like to go, great for marketing, a fast growing market with customers prepared to pay more for an ecologic wine then a normal wine. It is also easier at the moment to find a wine importer that will buy your production when it is ecologic.

The ecologic wine market in Spain is growing fast, 10 years ago not many hectares where planted and run in an ecologic way, but today there are already 1000 of hectares of vineyards run this way. This might very well be the solution for the lower price segment European produced wines to compete with the ultra low prices of wine from Chile and Argentina for example.

NEW IDEES!

I have now come up with a few really affordable idees that I think is doeble for a little vineyard. I will post a few good things here about it soon, but will not give a way it all, untill I am using it my self first!

Wine marketing is ofcourse essential if you want to launch a new wine. But how to do it? there are several great ways to market wine and be unique. All you have to do is to find a way that suites you and your vineyards wine.

How to market your new vineyards production is ofcourse a trickybit. Get in contact with wine importers in several coutries at an early stage. Send them sample bottles of your wine as soon as possible. Getting in by the right wine importer is a major step in the right direction for your own vineyard. Everybody is aming for the big customers, but if you run a smaller vineyard you will be just as successfull if you find several smaller importers that will take up your vineyards production. Also you will find a local market that you can exploit. Make the most of your efforts in marketing your vineyard and get it known!
