Plan to start a new vineyard? Here are a few guide lines of what to look out for and how to get it done and what to avoid when establishing a new vineyard. Lets start with the obvious things when it comes to starting a new vineyard. No matter where you plan to start your vineyard, may it be in USA, England, France, Italy, Sweden or why not China. It all comes down to a few very simple questions you have to ask or look at to get your vineyard started in the right way. It is different if you plan to only have a vineyard, buy this we mean if you only plan to grow the grapes and sell them to an existing winery or other merchant or if you plan to start your own winery too on the vineyard and be able to deliver a ready product Choice of land. When choosing land to start a vineyard it is not only size that matters there are a lot of other things too. So lets start with the most important things about choosing land for a new vineyard.
Moving a vineyard can not be done (well you can always start a new one somewhere else and re do the whole process of planting and nursing for 5 years before you get you first production crop). SO get the right land in the right place for your vineyard and make sure it has the potential to give you crops that you want and can make a living from! How big a property/land do you need to run or start a vineyard? Well that is a tricky question to answer! This depends a lot on how you plan to make your vine and how you plan to sell it and where you are located. As an example, a vineyard in S. America gets less paid per litre of wine produces then a vineyard in France when they both sell in bulk to a vine trader. Lets look at Spain in this example and for a non classed vine made by a small vineyard you plan to establish. Wine sold in bulk in Spain as “table wine” currently pays about 0.6-0.9 euros per litre of wine. And to make one litre of wine you basically need one kg of grapes. When it comes to size you can say that one acre of land normally gives you 1500-2000 bottles of wine (this 75cl standard bottles) per year when in full production. I know some produce much more and some much less, but I find this to be a pretty good calculation. Can you make a profit with this in mind with the property you are planning to buy to establish your new vineyard?
