Plan to start a new vineyard, part 3

Water! You will need lots of water so making sure that the property you plan to buy for your new vineyard has enough access to water is absolutely essential.

Different countries and different places have different amounts of rainfall per year and this need to be completed with water added to the vines daily. How can sufficient with water be assured on the property? Are there any wells on the land? How much water will they give? Are there any other water sources and what is the cost of water if supplied to the property? In Spain for example water can sometimes only be brought to a property with a water tanker, this will be a very expensive way to supply water to your vines!

Is there a water storage possibility on the land? In Spain and many other countries there are large water deposits built on properties to assure water during seasons with no or very little rain water. A vineyard is very water intensive so a clear and good source of water is needed.

Worth noting is that if there are wells on the property or you plan to drill wells for supplying water on the property you might want to test the water quality BEFORE you buy the property. You could find that the water quality is not suitable for the vines you plan to plant when establishing your new vineyard!
