I have long had the dream of starting a vineyard, somewhere out on the country side in Spain, on what is called a ”rural-property”. Not to big and not to small, but enough to make perhaps 50-100 000 bottles per year. My dream vineyard is a vineyard just big enough that I can get some help to run it when I get old, sitting on my terrace watching the grapes grow, have a long walk every day among my vines, watching them grow and nursing them. There are several things you have to decide long before even planting your first grape, and lots of things to get right from the start when you want to plant a new vineyard. On this website I will give you my ideas and knowledge that I have learned on how to start a vineyard. Remember, there are several ways to do most things, and I am only giving you some of my ideas of how to do it, and what problems I have already seen coming, and I have not yet bought my rural property in Spain yet! There is lots of information available on the net, lots of ideas and statistics, I however still found it hard to find essential information of how and what, and what is best to do. If you have any ideas or knowledge from running a vineyard, I will be very happy to include informationon you can supply to this website, as long as it is all about “creating a vineyard” or “how to run a small vineyard”. Just email me with your thoughts! I have now started looking at all the diffrent posiblilies for getting goverment grants or as it is in the EU, EU-grants, to start my vineyard! There are so many diffrent grants avalible to farmers and when you then add ecological vineyard to it there are many many diffrent grants avaliable! Not only can you get grants for planting your very own vineyard but you can get grants for all the equipment needed for running you vineyard. With so many rules and laws I have desided to take professional help in the djungle of grants as soon as I find a property and buy it. This weekend I had a new look around what was avalibel and I think I have settled for a budget on what I should spen and on what. I have decided to buy a property of about 20- 40 acres. It should already be planted in some way with a little wines and I will then plant the rest my self as I go along. There has to be a posibility to get a planning permison for a house for me to live in and ofcourse for a "barn" that I can use as my winery! Budget wise I am looking to spend about euros 100 000 on the land alone, and actually there is quiet alot for sale that would suite me and my purpose! Am I getting closer to my retirement dream? Who knows, but I will post more information here all the time.. good luck with your own vineyard! I have tried to group information in to a few “headings” so that it will be easier to sort. “Choosing a property”, here you will find info of what to think about when you want to buy a property for a vineyard, since my dream place is Spain, much of the information is about “rural property in Spain”. “Planting vines”, information of how to plant vines and of course what vines to plant! “Making a wine” are you really going to make the wine yourself? Or perhaps just sell the grapes to some other winery? What to think of when planning to make wine. “Marketing and Market” how will you sell your wine? Are there any really good ideas out there of how to market a new wine? Where are the wine buyers? "Ecological Wine making" ofcourse here is how to make ecological wine. One of the fastest growing transitions in wine production in Spain at the moment. I hope you find this site, however small it might be, helpful and interesting! And if you just like I dream of one day having your very own little vineyard, then this information might answere a few of your questions. Closer and closer! My dream of buying and developing a small vineyard in Spain seems to come closer and closer! I have now found a lovely little vineyard for sale in south of Spain and it already produces ecological wine! It has only vines planted on about 7 hectars but there is a nother 13 hectar to it that can be planted as well. It also comes with much of the equipmnet for the winery such as fermentation tanks for wine production and has a real vineyard tractor. It will need an upgrade on water supply system for the vineyard and lots of other things, but it could be mine! I will soon post more info about the vineyard and all the equipment in the little winery (vinery) that is included in the sale, and what upgrades I plan for it! If you are planning a new vineyard you will need many things for your winery. Fermantation tanks, wine storge tanks, in aluminium or stainless steel.You will need oak barells for storing your wine. Grape cruchers, grape steamers, vineyard tractors and ofcourse the wine grape vines for planting your own vineyard. Starting a new vineyard is many peoples dreams, it is a life for many who wanted to have a life change and just get away from the rat-race! Starting your very own vineyard is one way of doing it.
